Yay for number two! I think a blue plasma weapon sounds like a splendid plan. If you do decide to do a diorama it'll be a good warm/cool contrast with number one.
It's great that things are feeling easier/smoother. That means you can start focusing on brush control - a skill I'm learning is essential to this mad hobby of ours.

Thanks Arch. I never gave it a thought: a warm/cool dio with these two might work really well. I shall have to pinch that idea and pretend it was my plan all along...

On a totally separate note: these chaps arrived in the post today:
(This one is only dry-held together by me to check all the bits are there.)
I won both for under a tenner in total on ebay. Yay!
After Ork number two I'm looking forward to getting my brushy mitts on these ones.

You should have a lot of fun with those guys! They're nice and easy to assemble because they fit together so well. It'll also be an interesting change from the Orks. I have them waiting in my "to-do" box for me to get around to.

Sorry - lots of painting, not much posting. Here's where I've got Ork number 2 up to.
Blue is so much nicer to paint than red, so I've probably gone too far with the OSL on this chappie. Might need to knock it back a bit.

Thanks Arch - yep, still need to do the goggles. They're quite recessed so I'm thinking of punting them white with a bit of blues highlight, then putting a bead of UHU glue in each so they look like bulbous magnifying goggles. No idea if it'll work though...

not sure if uhu works or not, but GW 'ardcoat is another option, its a paint on gloss varnish, its also quite thick so may be able to get the bulbous look, might take a few coats though
i think the osl is looking good but i'd either tone it down on the shoulders or put a bit up his goggles, it doesnt seem to match up in my mind at the moment

UHU glue does work on minis - some guys use it for gore and saliva effects. Alternatively you could paint it up like a gem - there are tones of tutorials, but this one makes the process pretty clear. Then a drop off UHU to give the bulging effect. You could use a complementary colour (in this case orange) to give the mini some additional interest.

Okay, so I've done the backpack and straps and put him together. I totally cocked up the goggles, and had a devil of a time just getting them back to black, so they're still not done for now.
A good shout by Arch, by the way: I did the straps orange and I think it adds a nice complement. I also did a bit of messing around with the silver, gold and colours and managed to get the backpack a nice rosy gold/copper colour, which I'm quite pleased with. The globby bit of plasma needs more work on it though too.

But I was getting a bit frustrated with the painting malarkey, so decided to have a go at constructing. Behold: my first ever base!
First pic:
Looking a bit rubbish at this stage. It's made of foam board, some greenstuff paving stones, and polyfilla(!) - plus some lovely bits of old wood from the forest behind my house.
Second stage:
I cut closer to the stones, then made the walls more interesting with greenstuff.
A closer look at the brickwork: all done with the wrong end of a paintbrush and a blunt scalpel.
Third stage:
Up on a bit of height. I wanted to make a sort of narrow path with a cliff edge effect, so got it up a bit higher.

That is fabulous! I'm totally intimidated by basing for some reason. Will tread where angels fear to venture with painting, but I'm stuck on remedial basing at the moment. Model train shops are a great place to find cheaper basing materials in bulk - foliage, static grass etc.

i got a huge bag of mixed grass from amazon, cost about £10 but i cant remember what the company was called, they had a variety of sizes. the ork is looking pretty good, even if he is australian and i'm liking you're base, you're greenstuff skills are beyond mine by a long shot lol, i can just about manage to fill gaps and maybe some simple stones made out of any spare bits i have lol
arch: basing can be fun, my first attempt at a scenic base was done on a budget just to see if i could make something half decent, made it out of an old gw sprue for firmness and layered cardboard, used some of the grass i was mentioning, a couple of twigs to form a tree, you get the idea, it doesnt look half bad and cost probably less than £5 if you count the paint used etc, i've not even put any minis on it lol but it was a fun little project to do

Thanks Sicks - I'm not sure why they keep popping up upside down on here. They're the right way round on my mac, upside down on my pic hosting site (but I can't rotate em) and right way up on my phone in the forum. Strange. The greenstuffing is quite simple: just dip the handle of your brush in vaseline and use it to poke the greenstuff around and shape it. Then a scalpel for any deep scores or lines. The cobbles/paving were made by making little irregular balls of GS and squashing them flat with my big fat thumb.
Arch - I have to say it's good fun. It's worth sketching it out (really, really roughly) on paper just to make sure the size is okay, and then chucking lots of stuff at it. Although saying that, The base is quite long and is making me wonder whether I do a third Ork (maybe peeking out behind the arch?).
