Thanks all: you're all very kind.

Oh yes! Go the angry zelot route.

Yep, I'm leaning that way... in fact I gave that a go tonight. Here's the steps:

1. Took off the hood, hair, and added some creases into quite plain clothes. Now you can see the veiny neck a bit better, so I'm happy with that.

2. Now added a strap around the robe – I'm thinking a bit of brocade freehand when it comes to painting this chap. The funny headband is just a base I could bake for the ridiculously hard to make bishop's hat...

3. And here is the hat. It's a bit wobbly in places. Not sure if I want it to be a bit battered – I'm thinking of painting him up with a bit of dirt and blood spatter, like he's a proper crazy zealot, but it may be to rubbish. It's unbaked, so I can always try it again.

That'll do for the mo. Have a good 'un everyone!

Welcome back!

1. Good luck with the house
2. Glad you are here again to show us your natural sculpting skills!
3. Great face and neck!
4. The hat looks a bit too long to me, but on the last pic looks better... not sure whether it has to be with the angle of the picture or not ^^'

Ha, Ghost BC... could make an interesting paint job for this...

Maenas, as always you give good tips and critique, thanks for those. I've smoothed the hat and made some tweaks (below) – hopefully that solves the issues. It was tricky to make, and I was trying to walk a fine line between oversized and funny, but semi-realistic to suit the face. Let me know if I got the balance wrong!

So here he is: The Bloody Bishop. Quite a simple one, which leaves plenty of plain spaces to paint and practice my smoothness. I've kept the hat as a separate piece so I can stick it on later. Embarrassingly, I don't have any models to paint at the moment, and I've been hankering after a painting session, so I'm glad this chappie came together quickly (even for me). Total is about 3 hours, maybe another half hour fiddling with the hat.

Thanks Ten, glad you like it.

So so last night I had a painting session (first in nearly two months!) and I was pretty rusty. I blocked out some of the face colours and skin tones. Very early days...

Nice colours going on here, lovely start, I also got the ghost vibe with the hat on, but when he had his hood he reminded me for some reason of Ron perlmans character in mutant chronicles

Good to see you back again!
Bloody Bishop is both well-sculpted and a really cool character. Interesting to see an obvious figure of authority losing his mind in rage!

Thanks WGS, Sicks, Saint. Yes, I'm hoping to convey the right touch of madness (one can sympathise...).

I had another play with him last night, upping the contrast and adding more crinkles and wrinkles. I'm a bit disappointed so far - he's a mess of brush strokes and I'm struggling to get him smooth - but the colour seems broadly right. There's a bit of blue, yellow, purple in there to add interest. I'll keep brushing away until we get something out of it.

Here he is with and without the hat (doesn't look like much has changed, but he has, honest):

Thanks folks, glad you like him so far. I'm going to try and finish up the skin and do the eyes tonight, see if that gives him a bit more 'life'. Still struggling to get a nice smooth skin look, but I'll keep trying.

One question: what colour do you think for the robes/hat?

I think hes looking good already, I wouldn't worry too much about getting smooth skin because what you have already suits it quite well, I think once you've done the eyes it will pull the face together more. I'm not sure what colour robes/hat would work, perhaps some cool desaturated colours to keep the face more in focus

I say ivory/white. That will make the red skin tones stand out and add to the 'about to burst something' look. Then you can do the vestments in a contrasting color. Purple maybe?.
