BloodFather's Axis of Chaos

Thanks man. It's probly 4"x4". Had to make it bigger than I wanted simply to fit all the junk on it. Really wanted to use some of the designer wood my main man Khonner sent me, but alas, it had to wait. I'll use it for sure on my next piece tho. My fear with this base is that I over did it and I could lose the dark elf's face or the tip of his sword as the focal point.

Yeah slap that guy on there and check it out. If he is dwarfed you might add another small patch of ruble or Collin he is standing on to give him more of a presence.

Indeed. He scales up to it ok though, I think.

I was was going to make this my 5th Dimension entry. But I'm not so sure it will measure up considering the voting criteria. They are looking for something new and creative. Different colors, strange source lighting, etc. while this is a decent piece it doesn't really fit with what they are looking for, I believe.

I need to steal all of your NMM knowledge BFK...

I would enter that piece. Think of it this way, you've already beaten my entry...

I keep seeing updates, but not finished models. C'mon man! I'm dieing here. I want to see it all brought together!

Lol you're correct. I did get kinda out of hand with the updates. I vastly underestimated the time it would take to do many of the things I did to the base. I just kept adding things in an effort to make things look overgrown and natural. Brass etched leaves can be a birch :) to work with. But it is coming soon...

I would gladly take the time to teach you what I was taught or picked up. Just pick a model or even a part of a mini, a sword or helmet or cuirass etc, and I'll talk you through exactly what I would do to make it work. Then I'd ask that you send a pic of just the base layer, then a pic with the first shadow, and so on. That way we could see what you did wrong or right. This offer stands for anyone, really. It's my pleasure to help out an artist.

Wow the base is shaping up really nicely! I wanna see it with the mini on it NOW! :) nice NMM a few pages back btw! Keep up the good work man!

Just about done. Fixing his face and adding highlights to some of the plants on the base. Then photo time. If it's too dark out here by then I'll have to wait til tomorrow since I shoot outside. And I can't show my gallery pics until 5th Dimension approves me. But yes you'll have it today or tomorrow. Promise!!!

Ok, so I am done. Took some pics under less than preferable lighting conditions. Gallery pics will follow AFTER I notify 5th Dimension. But this is it, consider it done. Obviously not too late to change anything, so C&C appreciated.

Hey BF,

The base looks very impressive. But I feel like the mini and all the lovely NMM is a bit lost amongst it all. Giving the white points on the mini a bit of a retouch might help. But I think his low position in comparison to the high part of the base (where the statues feet are) and the tall vegetation is overshadowing him. It also lacks a little in the sense of story. The figure's pose is a challenge, like he's looking down his blade at an opponent/enemy. IMHO the base doesn't quite fit with the attitude of the pose. Don't get me wrong, you've done a great job on both, I'm just not 100% sure they work together that well.

I'd have to agree with Stew. Two great pieces of work but the base drowns the mini. I'd consider bringing another mini into the scene, make it a story. IMHO the red of the large flowers is also my first point of attention due to the physiological nature of there size and colour, maybe mute them or change the colour completely... my 2pence mate :)

Hey Stew,

I agree with you 100%, and in fact you just mentioned everything I was worried about throughout the whole base building project. His shiny armor becomes less impressive when surrounded by 15 shades of green, some statues, a skeleton, huge variety of plant life, and then a red earth that by itself is hard to sell. I will drop that big green bush I added last minute on the right side. This should help make him stand out a bit more. But yes, I wish I would have just kept him standing atop a simple rocky outcrop with a couple of shrubs. Because, in retrospect, his stance begs for elevation. So by putting him on a big base and placing him in the middle of it, I make him lose his natural significance. Lesson learned. Big time. My goal was a base overgrown with wildlife. I accomplished this, but it doesn't fit the mini :(

thanks for being honest about it. I appreciate that. Composition is off. I'll just have to chalk this up as a lesson learned at this point. But it was fun and I'm happy with a lot of other things I did. Cheers!!!

Just saw your remarks too Dennis. Thank you and as you can see I totally agree. Not sure if I will just remove the flowers or move on.

Also, I think the scene can be improved with lower angle photos. The base itself is a flat one so I think I need to shoot from the plane of the mini. And I think I'll remove those flowers and replace with the smaller field flowers present elsewhere on the base. We shall see is this helps.

Again, very helpful from you both, thanks. I'll get some better photos and see if we can't salvage it.
