Wow thanks buddy I'm glad u like it. Don't get me wrong I am very happy with a few aspects of it. I am digging the tiger pelt, I like how his face came out, and I LOVE the base. However, if just feels unfinished to me. There are quite a few places where the paint could have been smoother, I could have reapplied some glazes that became too subdued, cleaned up some lines, etc. Sadly, what I am most upset with is the basic fundamental beginner stuff that I got sloppy with. I wanted to go back and fix some of the stuff, but I took a round of practice pics in a new light box and then broke the minis sword when cleaning the work area. Lost the sword. So I just used the best of my practice pics for the gallery and put this one away. Time to call it a closed chapter. Glad u like it. Biggest lesson learned? Never stray away from the fundamentals. Never rest on your laurels.

Looks great! Your NMM keeps getting better. The sword is really nice and there are some spots (like his thigh armor) where if you told me it was well done TMM I'd believe you. I'd like to see you keep pushing the contrast on the non metallic sections (non-NMM parts) but that gets into the realm of style. The right amount of contrast is subjective but high contrast is a popular style. From you NMM we know you can do it, so something to think about for the other parts of your next project.

Sorry to hear about the sword, that really sucks. I broke the sword on my current project, so it happens.

Very good and helpful comments. Some parts were definitely rushed and didn't get the attention they deserved. If I could say there was one thing I wish could improve on as a miniature painter, I wish I was cleaner. This is difficult for me to explain, and I guess if I could explain it I wouldn't need help improving upon it, but the cleanness that artists like Sprocket have I am envious of. Not sure what this requires, but if I figure it out I'll share it with the world!!!

Need to apply contrast to all things. Yes, it is a popular style but one that I both appreciate and strive for. Thanks DP.

I can only agree. The photos changed everything. Many thanks to everyone that took the time to offer advice. I made a very quick light box but the results are paid dividends. Now I need to improve upon it to let just the right amount of light in. Thanks for noticing the difference KB.

In other news, last day at the Yakima training center. I MUST bring some sagebrush home, as I have heard it makes the best mini trees....

Havent had a free hour to sculpt this whole time. Exhausted....

BoK it is a nice figure and nice photograph of it and I like it. The NMM is nice but as mentioned more contrast might help. In regards to cleanness that you mentioned. I myself have recently noticed something in my painting with diluted paints is that I have had to much colour loaded into the brush which makes the paint float out a little when I paint. not much but enough to leave edges and other things and that makes the figure less Clean. properly not what you are talking about but still check that and see if it brings an improvement for you.

Now days I always use a paper towel or hand to remove paint until it is less paint in the brush.

Now I will go back into lurking in the shadows and await your next project.

Thanks for the words of wisdom mate. Very important stuff there. I do believe that I have mastered proper unloading, however. I am a thumber, for lack of a better term. And I have grown to know exactly the best consistency for my purposes. This is something I probably mastered in the last 3-4 months, though, so maybe I'll start looking "cleaner." I guess what I mean by clean is very much close to Sprocket's style. He has been notes for having such a clean and crisp style, and this is something I surely aspire to. Also, I don't think it's due to rough blending that I am coming up a bit short. My blending has been ever improving and I definitely receive a lot of compliments on this.

Here's what I think. I need to paint cross hatch more often. I rarely do this, and I have heard that this promises more even coverage of layers. I won't use this pattern of painting everywhere, but most surfaces require this, I believe. My normal directional painting is done in a manner that best blends the layers. However, I need to use this cross hatch on my base coats. Next, I need to find a solution to the dust or specks I get in my paint. You all know what I mean by this. Too often this happens and then I have to scrape off the speck, and this messes up current and subsequent layers. This doesn't happen too often to me, but when it does it promises to leave a rough area. Need to do more brush maintenance and find a better means of troubleshooting when this occurs.

Finally, I touched brush to mini today for the first time in over two weeks. Hallelujah!!!!! I was shaking today in anticipation of my time with the pallet. Didn't realize just how damn important this hobby is to me. Year 1 has been exciting. May there be many, many more.

Agreed cross hatching is how you blend it works for me and the more I do it the faster you become at it..it's changed my whole painting sessions..it's a game changer fo sho!!!

BaM do you do it on just the base layer? I couldn't see it working on highlights and shades because you need to paint toward the HL and toward the shade, ya know?

By the way, I finally uploaded my first ever display mini, the Frozen Khorne Lord, onto Putty&Paint. I was reluctant to do it in the past, because I was warned by my Sensai, AndyG, to bring my A Game on P&P, and to not upload projects that are half ass. However, after much internal debate I realize that I am especially fond of my base work on this project, so I may as well share it without fear of whether or not it medals.

Thanks Bailey! You are certainly a very inspiring influence to me!!! Love viewing your art, and love reading your masterful and commanding expertise for the SBS tutorial. Have you made any of the recent purchases we spoke about-Steampunk wise?

Have you considered taking part in the Gokan paint a long? Be awesome if you took part!!!

PS-Must be great seeing your "Lost in the Woods" piece as one of the top 2 painted minis of 2014, and in the Top of CMON's entire history of minis. Say what you will of CMON's voting system, when a piece has that many views and votes and still maintains a 9.8, you have effectively appealed to the broadest audience possible. There is not a more accurate or precise means of determining if a mini is universally adored. Makes me wonder why you don't tackle more NMM fantasy settings. Though I suppose the answer is obvious: One should paint for oneself, not to appeal to an audience.

It'll be a while before I come up with anything even close to that again. But I am always on the lookout for a fantasy project that grabs my attention. I may try another fantasy OSL piece for crystal brush if I'm able to get to it.

I hadn't read the Gokan thread until just now. It's very tempting. I'm a little concerned about taking on too much right now, but I may join in anyway even if I can't finish the piece until later.

I ordered two of the Scale75 steampunk girls, but that's it. Right now I'm waiting on the Black Sailors kickstarter to launch. Those 54mm Orc pirate sculpts look fantastic.

Oh my, I think I have incorrectly referred to the title of your project as "Lost in the Woods" about a dozen times. Sorry for that. Dark....dark.

I assure you that that project had nothing to do with right place at the right time or any other such nonsense. It is so celebrated simply because of the anticipatory sense for adventure it evokes. You stuck to your guns on some things to which really lent itself towards the success you have achieved, such as keeping the back so colorless. What can I say, it is just such a damn cool project for which you should be very proud. Can you take it to Crystal Brush, or do the rules prohibit this since it has been used in other comps and has been photographed in its competed state? If you can use it, you'd be silly to leave it at home.

Dude, puh-leeez take part in Gokan!!! I'd love to see your take on it. I know you probably have a ton of projects lined up, but that's okay, so do I! I have to finish my current project, and then paint Cannibal from Simon's range, and THEN start on Gokan. Many other people involved have similar circumstances too, wouldn't surprise me if it had a deadline of something as far off as 1 March 2015. Plus , I need your guidance on this one since it's my first 54mm. I think you'll do a kick ass job of it.

The Orc sailor range is an instant classic. Love these. Did you see the one from Andrea that I showed you when you PMed me? Been considering getting him for months now, mulling over it because I have some dio ideas. But if an entire range of orcish pirates is produced, this will be incredibly cool.

Okay, I'm in for Gokan. I'll email Olivier and see about getting a copy too. I don't think 54mm is that big a change from the regular gaming stuff. You just get a little more room to work on your blends and add extra detail. People will often say you should reduce your contrast on bigger figures, but I wouldn't change anything with a 54 (especially considering the one of the most common pieces feedback we hear on CMON is 'needs more contrast'). Going from 28mm to a bust, now that requires a much more significant adjustment in your approach. Considering all the effort you put into your work and improving your technique, I think you're going to enjoy working on a slightly larger figure.

As for Lost in the Dark, part of what I mean about 'right time' is personal. I've had that figure for two years before starting on him. There was no plan in place, one thing lead to another and the whole thing just sort of grew into the final product. So if I'd started it months earlier or right now I'd have ended up with something different. Unfortunately it's not eligible for Crystal Brush. Anything that's been in another competition or published in a print or online magazine can't compete at CB. As I read the rules, just showing the finished work in your WIP thread or the main gallery should not disqualify an entry. It's too bad, I'd really love to see how it'd stack up against the other entries.

Yeah, that Andrea pirate orc would look great with the Black Sailors ones in some sort of dio. I can see you putting the little goblin pirate running right behind him. Maybe Gokan will get you hooked on 54's just like I am. :smile:

First off , hell yes! Glad you're on board for Gokan. Will be a pleasure to paint with you. Hey, in your fairest estimate, when do you foresee actually starting to paint him? I will time my own projects to coincide with you. For me, it's a question of do I just finish my current project, estimated 3-4 weeks. Or do I start on my Cannibal dwarf, adding another 4 weeks before I start Gokan? So I can either start in 3-4 weeks or 8-10 weeks. And I think I speak for a lot of guys when I say that you should definitely do your standard SBS on your blog.

Those San Savino pics are incredible, overall. All of the pics are great, some really top notch projects at that comp. in response to the box art. Wow....wow wow wow. So much character! Orcs make for great pirates, don't they? Think those may be your ticket to CB success.
