Thanks Canny!

I tackled the wings. I did a couple of scary washes with Reaper Ashen Blue then Breonne Blue with matte medium and water with the figure laying down to get so teh wash would not run down the wings. I skipped the mid tone, Templar Blue, because I wanted a tint and a shadow, not blue wings. The shades came out nice but I lost a lot of the Linen White Highlights so I came back in and glazed them back in. I also *dry brushed* some of the linen white back on. DO NOT tell ANYONE that I used dry brushing on the wings. XP Had a nice session this morning reworking the cloth with the blues, Yellowed bone and Linen White. Did a heavy wash of Stone Grey on the Scythe handle.

I am feeling pretty good about the big stuff. Now I need to figure out the face, the scroll/banners that are stapled to his wings and hour glass :/ I will also work more on the armor bits but I have a plan for that.

Ok, Quick update. I think Ol' Mr. D is painted! Got the armor done as much as I think I can with out adding too much paint. I added 'text' to the left banner and a very faded Hospitallers cross in red shaded heavily with the blue, to the right hand banner. You can't see it in the picture. I also went after that hour glass I really want to be able to paint glass better I think i got close with this one but still not perfect. I know I need to add some light blue but I am not sure where. I think I am better off leaving it than trying to play with it more What do you guys think? Am I missing anything? Maybe one more white dot on the hour glass? :

And the base is coming along, although the snow still looks a lot like tooth paste here, as of writing this it looks much better and the blue is very subtle.

I am going to still add a flower growing up through the snow and ruin for Death to examine with his downward gaze. Also I am adding a skull and gold cup tumbling out onto the scree at the bottom of the ruins to represent a fallen kingdom.

I made the cup using my dremel as a lathe. I just clamped it to my bench and used an exacto and a file to 'scrape' and 'part' my shape. It was pretty fun but if I do it again I think i will use the electric drill. The dremel is not slow enough. Even at its slowest speed its too easy to cook the sprue. Still might be a neat technique for making a lot of hydraulic cyber pistons or, you know, a banister or some table legs or something:

Nice work Loving the wings, and the cup is a great use of a sprue, never would have thought. The base is looking exciting I should post my little base for my Wolf Priest.

Thanks Canny! Your a Kiwi right? Did you see the great Hobbit Hole diorama that is on the New and Notable box right now? Here it is: http://www.coolminiornot.com/344865 probably just looks like your backyard :) The write up on the bottom is pretty great too.

Here is an update on the base with the skull and cup. I also cleaned up the snow quite a bit. The blue translucence in the snow is ~1 part Reaper Surf Aqua mixed with ~2 parts white. you can't see it in the picture but I also added a very very thinned glaze of Vallejo metal medium to give the snow some sparkle. You can't really see it until you hold it in your hand and move the base around. Maybe too subtle but I think it looks perfect in person. Set up part of my photo station so I have some more neutral light. I didn't fool with it much for the WIP picture. I have my fingers crossed for the photo session. I also took off the masking tape:

And here is my little spring crocus that will be poking up out of the melting snow. Made out of green stuff and a tiny steel wire from an old bicycle brake cable. Super tiny but very strong. Brushed on primer for now. I turned the contrast way up on the photo to see some of the detail. Hmm, maybe needs another coat of primer:

Hang on some one shrunk my back yard!

Yep I am a kiwi. Loving the snow and its Blue shade, how its more in the deeper bits to represent shadow. Ties in well with the stone thats a bit blue too. what was the snow made from!? I will be needing some snow skillz soon.
The Skull and goblet are nicley placed in the setting and bring character to the base. looking forward to the crocus.

Demihuman, rather a nice treatment of Death in that aspect.

Personally I would like to see someone sculpt Death in a more humane way, more as a Mother carrying a body in tenderness and compassion. But I supposed our psychological/instinctive/ingrained fear of our own mortality will not allow us to perceive Death as anything else than a terrifying Grim Reaper.

However I digress, the base looks rather spiffy as well, perhaps a few (very few) sprinkled bicarbonate of soda crystals might help the snow effect.

Thanks guys.

Zab, The flower is about 1/2" ( 1 cm) tall
DR, We have a Dio De La Muertos parade out here. It's a much different take on death. I bet you would like it. I am going to try to to get my metal flakes in the snow to sparkle in the photo if not maybe I will do the bicarb. Last time I did it turned yellow after a couple of years maybe it was the PVA glue?

Hmm here is first pass at a photo. Do you guys think I need to something else with the flower? I can't find the sparkle in the snow in a photo but it looks great in person... :/

This photo is a full stop under exposed but still looks a little washed out.

Being so monocrome the crocus and goblet realy stand out I think the pic is good you could maybe go a little crisper and move the backdrop over a touch more behind the scythe.
I have to say that scythe realy is tops love the rusty shadow area.

Thanks Canny, that's what I needed to hear. After looking at this thing all day i just needed a reality check. The Scythe did turn out good if I don't say so myself, although I see a couple of mistakes right now. It was pretty easy to do. I saw some like it in one of the CMON adds. Because the rust is so textured it really hides the blends. Way easier than a straight up NMM. Ok, I think this is it:

Hopefully it will sell for more than the unpainted fig cost Gohkm. I hope it gets a good score. The mini is so well sculpted the z priming alone probably would have got a 6.5. I can't believe i cranked this guy out in less than 2 weeks! This is how I want to continue to paint.

Don't worry about the sparkle in the pics. The snow and everything is really nice. The sparkle will just be a bonus for whom ever gets it in the mail ;)

***edit***

ack! those look even better! That blade is awesome!

Demi, really nice to see the whole gig together. Very nice piece with a good approach to the colour scheme.

AND did you really just invite me to a San Francisco Parade???? Thanks but I'm not really that sort of boy. ;-)

Very cool project. Neat to see the lighter wintery take on death. And the lettering on his scythe is awesome. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Digga! Keep poking around in the forums. I feel like I have some skill that I am proud of but my talent is really just the tip of the ice-berg here.
