Well after a couple of rough baby nights I am thinking that I might have to scale back my painting ambition for 2014. :)

Canny, you have a baby coming soon right?

Anyways, I am going to work on some more basic projects for now. Here is one of the things I started at the workshop:

Pretty basic rusty metal base coat: bolt gun metal, washed with vallejo smoke, and then dry brushed a tad with lava orange. Over this I randomly sponged on some frisket mask. Next step was some dark brown ink sprayed on with the AB from 45 degrees below and then yellow from 45 degrees above with some lighter yellow toward the eye hole. The trick to getting the yellow to look nice is using some orange ink through the AB over the yellow. Finally scrape off the mask and it looks like pretty cool battle damage. Now I am going back in with some metallics and smoke on all the bitz. :)

Also started on a base:

I decided to push my sculpting skills and whipped up the is green stuff KO'ed Dreadnaught arm... looks pretty good right? Just kidding, I used some instant mold to take a mold from the side of a Dreadnaught I have kicking around and then pressed some greenstuff into it. The "Instamold" stuff is pretty cool. It's not as good a real mold making silicon but it is a lot more convenient to use, especially for stuff like this, where precision is not important. It is less useful for copying small details but it is a great, relatively cheap toy.

I also broke these guys out of the closet of shame:

Put them on some bases I made last summer. Trying to get them finished so the Kahn has someone to fight. They are on my desk right now. I am trying to finish up the freehand the do some light blue edge highlights on the armor and then I think I am going to poke around with some warm browns in the shadows to make them a little more appealing.

It's fun to go back and work on old stuff. Some things that were super hard then are now much easier.

What the hell man?! "Being a parent is hard so I'm not gonna have time to do awesome things very much - oh by the way, I did a few awesome things." Stop making it look so easy!!! That dread is so good already and the smurf's freehand is stunning already. Seriously, you are killing me.

yeha 10 days is the due date going in to hospital for the tour and a check up tomorrow. Ive been busy, I wish it was painting but Im flat out trying to get work done for my clients and finish off a few things at ours before bubs arrives.

Ambitions yeah I really want to push my painting skills this year too, Got Meg Maples coming to NZ in feb so doing her class, things I didnt even know existed like 2brush blending etc so thats going to be fun. I think maybe the next 3 months will be tough, but I hope like last time things got way better after that.

I love your yellow work I just want to pick up a SM and paint him yellow with nice brown shadows and almost white highlights with some Karol style pure white dots to simulate the shine.

how are your eyes I had to have a break after my chequres! your Smuffs are looking good, too I particularly like your work on the bases.

Right on Canny! As far as the free hand goes, I am super near-sited so i just take off the coke bottles and zoom in. You can do the yellow I have in like ten minutes with the airbrush just remember to use some orange. I guess to make it look more saturated.

Zab, that freehand is from several years ago and probably took me 3 weeks. Now-a-days I can knock out a Ultra Marine "U" in about 45 minutes. Some day i am going to paint some smurfs with just a regular "U" I think that would look cooler.

Do you guys have any ideas for the unfinished shields? Or input on correct markings? These are the guys from the Black reach set.

Hahaha, love your fake sculpting :) when I first read that I was like what the hell is he talking about then when I finished reading I was laughing. Nice job though with molding it out. Also your killa kan up there is AWESOME! You inspired me to pull out my kanz and paint them next. I might even lean towards your paint scheme since its so cool (but I will more than likely end up going for some badmoony type yellow.)

Thanks Zab! Blue and white it is! Someday I want to paint some olive drab marines.. or maybe digital camo?

Here are the shoulders basically done:

You can see the basic blue I used to clean it up. I still need to have a good shading and highlighting session or two on the blue and I will clean that up then. At arms length they look awesome! Pretty stoked on the sarge!

Here is some progress on the Kill Kan base:

Did another instamold press mold of the rear end of a 1/72 scale Tiger tank. i think it looks vaguely like the aft plate of Dread. I also finally managed to acquire some guitar strings! The basis of all good conversions!

The Dragon Dio is all done on sitting in place of honor on the office book shelf! My wife loves it and my 18 month old points at it and shouts Dagon Dagon Dagon!

It did not win the Reaper forum contest. Neither Zab, nor I, even placed in the Reaper forum contest. Oh well. I am happy that I got the 2nd most "likes" on the contest entry thread. (the first was Zab, until he re-did his photo.) That was the first time I painted something with a contest in mind and I have to say it really motivated me to get it done. I am a little disappointed I didn't even get a door prize but like I said to Zab "At least I have an awesome Dragon Diorama now" :) The photos came out pretty good!

Here is the voting link for the Dragon Dio:

That came out so well! Nice photos too. Now, let us never speak of dioramas or OSL again :dazed: until the next one!

I don't see you or Zab not placing in a painting competition. Thing had to be rigged from the get go for that to happen.

I like to think they were just flummoxed by our unadulterated awesomeness. In reality there were some really great dragons, and while any minis were allowed there was a bit of bias to Reaper ones - which I can't blame them for since it was on Reaper's forum. No more contests for a bit. Just fun painting of display pieces and what may soon become rare collectible GW minis from the DV set ;)

PS - WE WUZ ROBBED!!!! :sarcastic:

Right! Accentuate the positive!

Ok in the tradition of gaming groups everywhere, how about a late-ass Xmas present? I cast my KO'ed Dread base and it came out pretty good. Who wants one? PM me your address and I will send you one. It's regular Dread size and probably copyright infringement (Mods let me know if this is not cool, or if you want a base) It might take me a couple of weeks to get it cast and sent out but hit me up! (random folks who never post need not apply, unless you want to trade or something :{ )

Here is a little guy I am working on for the Can-Can base. He is going to be looting some wires from the ko'ed dread and hopefully I will be able to add a little OSL as if the end of the wire he is yanking on is sparking. His pose is a little static but I am hoping I can work that out by placing him at a bit of an angle.

Since this picture I went back in with some really thinned out blue/black and tried to line some of the darker shadows and the places where the yellow meets the green. I swear I am going to paint up some Flames of War infantry. I really like painting small-small. It goes so much faster. This grot's head just comes up to the termies' knees.

Nicely done with the dragon. Lots of excellent details. The grot is looking good too.. I has to be me getting older, but can barely handle 32mm scale without hunching over. Yet I say this, the Kingdom Death pinup priest that I picked up a few months ago is starting to call to me and she is freakin tiny..
