Sorry about that, you just seemed unsure. Figured it wasn't a coincidence. Either way, the freehand is amazing! How's your Photoshop skills? Glare can be fixed.

:D I know, just giving you guys a hard time. I won another wrestling match with my camera too. My set-up now is a light tent outside on a sunny day, manual focus, and steady my broken lens with my pinky as I shoot. Nothing ever seems to work exactly the way it is supposed too. I guess that's why I like mini painting so much. You know that right from the get go your project is going to be a PITA so you aren't bummed or surprised when it is.

Anyways, THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the nice posts on my WIP! It really makes me excited to paint! I haven't had as much time for forum lurking lately but, if you want to chat you can always PM me!

Okay, here is an update on the banner. The right grieve, was giving me a ton of trouble, so I went back in with my mid tone and it seemed to just work itself out. So often when I do the NMM I paint over all of my mid tone and I have to remind myself to go back in and redo it. I am also gaining a ton of respect for this KD sculpt. I am copying the box art for my banner and man, the way the feet are posed and the characters weight is balanced over that pose is really spectacular. Hopefully I captured some of that. Sword blade isn't quite done but I really need to be in the zone to finish it up.

Here is a how big it really is, about 5/8" wide and 1-1/8" tall:

Your copy of the box art is a bit better than mine. And maybe better than the box art, too.

And on Monday, I'm printing that banner and sticking it on one of mine.

No, not really.

Yeah, really.

Maybe...

:p

As far as flowing paint into crevices, what do you do about excess paint? I imagine there would be problems with pooling if you have even the slightest bit of too watery paint because of the flat surface.

Didnt realize that that thing is so small. Holy Bonkers! You are really killing it man. And I have the same problem with mid tones and NMM. Sometimes, like with my copper and with my gold, the mid tone pretty much isn't there when I am done, but this is fine. In these cases, the base coat is the mid tone, but when I glaze shadows over it the color completely changes. So basically that mid tone is needed because of how it reacts and changes to a shadow glaze. I hope this makes sense. If I don't shade by glazing, this isn't a problem, like with my steel which is shaded with several different colors to form a gradient. With gold and copper, I just glaze a single (copper) or two(gold) colors over top of the base coat, adding more layers the deeper I want the shadow to be, rather than darker colors. I do t know...now I'm rambling.

Thanks Guys!

BFoK, I like to dab the excess paint off on a paper towel, it's a process known as "towel-dabbling" or "napkin-shunting," you should read up on it ...zing! Seriously though, the surface is so flat that if I do get a little pool i try to tug its shape to what I want, then the tide mark makes a little guide for the next layer. Something else that is working for me on the banner is dark borders on a dark back ground. Many of the shapes fade to a near black edge and then the background is near black too, so if the edge isn't very crisp you can't see it and I think the eye auto corrects. Sort of a black velvet effect.

Alright, I did the red on on the Bannerman's mask and spikes. I will probably come back and tune it this afternoon. I used to never struggle with red and then everyone told me how hard red is to paint and now I struggle with it too. I am a little tempted to work more green or turquoise into the shadows, but I think I am just going to leave it for now so I can look at it with fresh eyes this afternoon.

I'm sure you already know this, but with red consider your mid tone-your standard saturated red if you are going for a traditional red-to actually be a highlight. That way you won't go too pink or orange. Minimize the size of these final highlights. They need to be über tiny. Other tips include use a flesh tone on that final highlight, or even just use pure white without mixing it with red, but this only works on certain textures. Also, even tho green is a complement I tend to prefer to darken with blue, VMC Dark Sea Blue to be exact.

Just some stuff I have picked up, use or discard whatever you find works for you. If all else fails, read Glazed Over (think that his name) recipe on Platoon Brit, Finished Stuff page 4. Your red looks pretty good, not sure I like the pink tips tho. Also begging for battle damage.

Thanks for the step-by-step, BF - I'm painting over a dozen of these, and the red is where I want to put the effort. So everything helps.

Thanks guys!

BFoK, yeah sea green is great with the red. I also really like the blue grey next to red. Okay back to work. This deadline is coming up fast...

Okay, here is a banner update, started on the head. the cloak and the sword are pretty much wrapped up. Of course, once I get every thing done I will fine tune it a bit to try and everything happy. You can see in this pic the hair is still roughed in. getting teh mask straight was a bear. I think it might have been easier to just do the face. I hope people get what it is.

The mask works very well, I don't think people would be confused as to what it's supposed to be. I really love the cloak you painted, bah the whole thing is just wonderful.
