I think if you search through my posts in this thread and others, I don\'t exhibit any trends of attacks on other users. Debate, Yes. Attacks, No.

Can\'t disagree there! This one got me getting quite tense at times, and digging round the internet, but it was all done with great spirit. I may disagree with Philologus here and there, but not on this point!

Hi marks from you Rob, and much appreciated. Civil debate is fantastic fun. That\'s why I keep hanging around on these forums.

I prefer the much more dignified term of sweater cows.

Thank you.

Those weren\'t my stats. That wasn\'t me speaking.

It was Bill Hicks in 1992.

All the usual cretinous pro-gun arguements have been fired off I see. Firearms were never designed for \'protection\', they were designed to kill. They offer no protection. They don\'t stop bullets or knives. They just let you fight back.

They offer as much protection to their owners as nuclear weapons do to the countries that possess them. It\'s all about the threat and fear of retaliation.

Not the sort of society I want to live in thank you.

All these arguements work for me. Yep gun offer no \"protection\", just the ability to kill the person who threatens you, again, works for me, thanks for making my point! :D

so do you walk around with a gun on you, even drawn? \'cos that\'s the only way I can see you\'d have time to retaliate. You\'re not going to say to an asailant, \"hang on, let me get my gun\" now are you

Ah, resorting to name calling I see.

The bottom line: It really doesn\'t matter what you think of our gun laws, or whether or not you think them cretinous.
You are not a citizen here.

In 1990, I was 17, I had three grown men trespassing and stealing pecans from family property. (Pecans run about $6 dollars a pound, and my father was unemployed, so this was similar to stealing food off of our plates.)
When I told them to leave and to leave the 50 pounds of pecans they picked, one pulled a knife and they became abusive and threatened my life, that is, until I pulled out the 12 gauge that was leaned up out of their sight.
After that they sat meekly on the ground and waited for the police. That is protection. The mere presence of the gun prevented the situation from getting out of hand, and/or my beating/stabbing/death.

In 1994, In the Navy, we had a woman come onboard with a .357 in her purse, intending on killing her husband. She shot, and missed. I, being on duty as roving patrol, snuck around and had her dead to rights, told her to drop the weapon, she did, then sat meekly as we zip tied her.

In 2000, my wife, then girlfriend, was accosted by a mentally unstable neighbor, who preceeded to try to beat my wife. Until he realised I had a 9mm pressed against his temple, and was about to pull the trigger. He sat meekly and waited for the police.

In 2002, a burgler broke into my house and fled merely from hearing me chamber a round.

Now, that\'s four personal experiences, in which my having a gun, put me in a far better position for myself, my shipmates or my loved ones, than if I had not had a gun.

From your experience of life, you may think you do not need a gun. That\'s fine.
I hope you never do need one.

From mine, I have learned I prefer to have one, and hope not to have to use it.

edit: Also, shooting, like most other things is a skill, just because you have a gun and the drop on someone does not mean you will hit them. If your scenario of always having the gun in hand were true, then cops, who have their guns holstered, would lose every gun fight. They usually do not.

I had a friend who was a cop. 6\' 8\", 310 lbs.
This guy was huge, he was called out to a scene and the perpetrator took 5 shots at him, all missed. My friend pulled his gun and shot once and ended the shoot out.
My friend swears that the guy should\'ve had him dead to rights, as he was out in the open and the shot was as easy as could be asked for.

Funny how the labels get\'s slapped on gun owners and makes NO distinciton between those who use weapons for good and those who use them for ill. FYI, there is a difference. Evildave is LIVING proof.

I have. I\'m hiring Evil Dave to be my bodyguard when I win the Lotto.

Other than that, I\'d rather be an armed citizen.

Probably not, but here\'s the rub.

Those of us who are pro-guns aren\'t trying to force them into peoples hands, while those who are anti-gun are actively trying to take our guns away.

Ironically enough, I generally find pro-gunners to be a more live and let live type of crowd (until threatened anyway), while anti-gunners to be more judgemental and insulting. Just a personal observation.

So who is more wrong?
The gun owner who is infringing upon no ones rights, or those that would actively infringe on others rights for their perceived safety?
Speaking of which, didn\'t England pass, or try to pass, a knife ordinance, in which kitchen knives over a certain length could not be had? It\'s a slippery slope, caused by fear, next it will be baseball bats, or cricket bats in yall\'s case.

My owning a gun is no threat to someone who is not actively threatening me.
