All the usual cretinous pro-gun arguements have been fired off I see. Firearms were never designed for \'protection\', they were designed to kill. They offer no protection. They don\'t stop bullets or knives. They just let you fight back.
Ah, resorting to name calling I see.
The bottom line: It really doesn\'t matter what
you think of
our gun laws, or whether or not you think them cretinous.
You are not a citizen here.
In 1990, I was 17, I had three grown men trespassing and stealing pecans from family property. (Pecans run about $6 dollars a pound, and my father was unemployed, so this was similar to stealing food off of our plates.)
When I told them to leave and to leave the 50 pounds of pecans they picked, one pulled a knife and they became abusive and threatened my life, that is, until I pulled out the 12 gauge that was leaned up out of their sight.
After that they sat meekly on the ground and waited for the police. That is protection. The mere presence of the gun prevented the situation from getting out of hand, and/or my beating/stabbing/death.
In 1994, In the Navy, we had a woman come onboard with a .357 in her purse, intending on killing her husband. She shot, and missed. I, being on duty as roving patrol, snuck around and had her dead to rights, told her to drop the weapon, she did, then sat meekly as we zip tied her.
In 2000, my wife, then girlfriend, was accosted by a mentally unstable neighbor, who preceeded to try to beat my wife. Until he realised I had a 9mm pressed against his temple, and was about to pull the trigger. He sat meekly and waited for the police.
In 2002, a burgler broke into my house and fled merely from hearing me chamber a round.
Now, that\'s four personal experiences, in which my having a gun, put me in a far better position for myself, my shipmates or my loved ones, than if I had not had a gun.
From your experience of life, you may think you do not need a gun. That\'s fine.
I hope you never do need one.
From mine, I have learned I prefer to have one, and hope not to have to use it.
edit: Also, shooting, like most other things is a skill, just because you have a gun and the drop on someone does not mean you will hit them. If your scenario of always having the gun in hand were true, then cops, who have their guns holstered, would lose every gun fight. They usually do not.
I had a friend who was a cop. 6\' 8\", 310 lbs.
This guy was huge, he was called out to a scene and the perpetrator took 5 shots at him, all missed. My friend pulled his gun and shot once and ended the shoot out.
My friend swears that the guy should\'ve had him dead to rights, as he was out in the open and the shot was as easy as could be asked for.
