Firearms & co... hate or love them?

I don\'t think this is true. The fear of guns is a fear of guns in the hands of those lacking the the discipline and mental capacity to learn to use them properly. Thus a hunting rifle in the hands of a 16-year-old boy in the suburbs, with no hunting background will likely cause considerably less harm than an assault rifle in the hands of that same boy. While the marksman on the tower has occasionally happened, it lacks the sense of loss of control that is the heart of fear.

Anyway, this debate isn\'t going anywhere.
We should switch and take up the following debate that was seen on the Colbert Report:
Christianity v. Islam, which one is right

Strange I re-call a country siging up to the UN, but then doing what it wants anyway when it\'s decided action shouldn\'t go ahead. Lets take all their weapons away too.

I\'m all for the U.S. leaving the U.N. immediately. We pay 22% (the ceiling) of the U.N.\'s annual operating budget, and more for \"peacekeeping\"... Yet we have the same voting authority on the security council as nations who pay 6% or less.

Good. Some may argue that the US owes far more to the world considering the amount of carbon emissions they produce and the damage that this is doing to the planet.

For a nation that seems obsessed with morals and doing the right thing, the US is remarkably reticent with its foreign policy. It\'s about time the \'civilised west\' started being a little more philanthropic and forward thinking.

@EvilDave: I appreciate your stance on firearms. No doubt I\'d view them differently if I lived in the US. However, you accuse the anti-firearm movement of being scared on one hand, and yet talk of house break ins, family members being assaulted and of the potential breakdown of society when validating the right to own weapons.

I own a baseball bat and some golf clubs. They\'re in the attic. They aren\'t next to my bed because the chances of me ever needing them are miniscule! I run a greater risk of falling down the stairs and breaking my neck when I\'m pissed. The UK is a safe place in which to live so I don\'t need a gun :D

I vividly remember, during the Kosovan War, the U.N. security council went mental because NATO sent in troops to protect civilians. The UN is rubbish.

Personally, I will choose freedom over control almost every time. It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about small arms or nuclear explosives.

In a properly armed society, weapons will moderate violence more than they will enable it. Handguns make casual violence on the streets far riskier for the would-be perpetrators. Nukes make casual warfare between states riskier still.

Yes, people sometimes misuse or abuse weapons, just as they do for a lot of other things as well. That’s what it really means to say “freedom isn’t free.”

In the final analysis, if you can’t trust someone with a firearm, then you for damn sure can’t trust him with something really dangerous, such as a vote.

I\'m trying to undertand the thinking behind it.

Let\'s try another approach.

When you walked into the gun store. Did you think.

I fancy buying a gun.......and I can protect myself and family with it.

or did you think

I think I\'d better get a gun for defence purposes..............oh and i\'ve always wanted to get one.

What was the initial reason for getting one?
I was given my first one to hunt, I\'ve bought 2 more to hunt with, one for home/self defense and one just because it is fun to shoot.

If I had more disposable income and disposable time, I would buy at least 2 more just to take to the range and shoot.

I\'ve noticed that you all seem to hunt a lot. Something else I\'m firmly against (but that\'s another topic)

Maybe thats the difference, in the UK the majority of people find hunting barbaric. So view guns not as \"sporting\" instruments, but more instuments of death.

Some interesting points though.

Just too finish, I\'m actually not againt guns I own Airsoft Replica guns. It\'s the real ones in public domain I have a problem with.

So Vincegamer, when you starting the religion debate...........I got a whole bag of religion remarks just waiting to be opened.

Actually, I absolutely hate hunting, but I have and will do it to survive.
When it\'s hunt or go hungry after a few nights of going hungry, you\'d come around.

Never quite got the whole \'hunting is barbaric\' thing. Animals hunt animals AND they eat animals! So we hunt animals and eat animals...........I dont quite see the problem.

Just out of curiosity, if i lived in America and passed all the stuff and could legally own a hunting rifle. How much do the cost, for say, an average one?
Not looking for any technical know-how just the average prices (the ammo as well)

There is a pro-gun sentiment that is very true - \"If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.\"
And if ordinary people might carry guns then ALL outlaws, more or less, will have guns. Criminals aren\'t stupid... If the guy you want to rob don\'t have any weapons a knife will do. If he might be armed then you get a gun. If he most likely has a gun you will shoot him first, then take his money...

from my experience as a petty criminal (though admittadly non violent, and mostly stoned and lazy), im going to disagree with that statement. no one wants to be in a shootout unless they have a death wish. even if the \"bad guy\" has a gun, hes going to think twice before doing a home invasion if he knows the owners probably have a gun, and know how to use it. similar to the MAD principle with nukes.

You can go to Big five and get a shotgun for like $300.
Or if your hunting small game a 22 will cost you like $200

Im not sure you actually need to pass all that much, just a background check. Other than that, you just need to be 18+.

Good God! this still going on? I\'ve been off me nut for two whole days and come back to find this is still roaring along. Who the hell goes out shooting stuff to eat? I mean, if your so broke why dont you just sign on, you get money then buy real food from a shop rather than eat some lice infested critter you guys have blasted to bits. The other thing, Iran can have nukes if they want, why not we got em and are we any better? have we not been the ones to going round bombing the sh!t out of all and sundry, to make the world better place?, I think not. Hell, the only country to used nukes against another nation is the US, I say we ban those gun nutters from having a military altogether, I say we should stand up and say \"Oi! Bush, you nutter, NOOOO!!!\" then we all can have a sing-song and hold hands across the world. Speaking of nukes and food theres a pot noodle in the cupboard with my name on it and a magic box that actually heats things up by spinning them round for a minute or two, all I gotta do is add the wet stuff. Cheerybye.

A lad I went to school with got locked up for microwaving hamsters at a party. I believe he went on to become a Royal Marine....

Yes obviously to survive anyone would, but where the hell do you live. You do live in the USA (richest country in the world) don\'t you. How often do you need to go out hunting for food?

Shawn, hunting for the sake of hunting is barbaric. Killing animals just for the thrill of the hunt, is barbaric.

Like I said above unless you\'re lost in the wilderness for days on end, then yeah, survival of the fittest. But how often do you get lost in the wilderness for days on end, and just happen to have your hunting gun with you.

Again this is a difference in the way we\'re brought up. You lot are brought up on hunting (or should I say certain states). We\'re brought up to buy food from shops.

Someone famous once said, \"... you will always have the poor with you\". In every country, there are those who are down and out of luck, shit can happen to anyone in any country. However, it does seem odd, in this day and age, that anyone in a developed country needs to hunt to eat.
