The rise and rise of the monkeys

No no my good man , Gibbons are part of the great ape family Any reason to rub it in!

I\'d like to clear up that ,no, apes do not have tails.

BUT

Most monkeys have visible tails, though they all still do have tails! Albeit a stubby bit of bone sometimes.

We have \"tailbones\", we\'s like the monkeys . I share Jahs\' view about apes though, if they took over we\'d all be stoners....Man that sounds so appealing right now at work.

Gibbons are not part of the great ape family, they are lesser apes. :p

Oh, and if the apes did rule we would not all me mellowed out or anything, if the chimps had any say. They\'re vicious creatures at times.

I stand corrected, \"lesser Apes\".

Chimps wouldn\'t have a say, they\'re getting thrown in with the monkeys lol Or they can be like ape slaves as seen in planet of the apes.

And that\'s about as much as we\'ll get from Bill after he\'s been pwned by a girl. lol

When discussing primates and other hominins never go up against the Mighty Anthropologist that is Meg! Muahahaha!

:D :D :D
I was not pwned ;) My original point still stands. Your original point is incorrect. So there :p

Don\'t worry Bill. Being pwned by girls is a fact of life that most of us have to live with on a daily basis.

Still it has it\'s perks

All monkeys have tails and all apes don\'t have tails.
False! :D

Some monkeys, such as the Barbary Ape (a tailless macaque), have the word \"ape\" in their common names (usually to indicate lack of a tail), but they are not regarded as true apes. Another tailless monkey is the Celebes Crested Macaque. And it\'s not confined to macaques - a baboon is another monkey with no tail. The main difference between apes and monkeys is that apes, including us, have opposable thumbs, while monkeys do not.

No your original point does not stand, wasn\'t that the whole point to this conversation? Baboons are monkeys but they have tails whether they are short or long. So, there are always exceptions to the rule (just a couple) but the rule still stands

Monkeys have tails and apes don\'t.

How Stuff Workds

While apes and monkeys are both primates, and are part of the same primate suborder, there are lots of differences between them. There are also lots of other sorts of primates. The distinction between different primate groups is based on physical characteristics and evolutionary ancestry. . . The easiest way to distinguish monkeys from the other anthropoids is to look for a tail. Most monkey species have tails, but no apes or hominids do. Monkeys are much more like other mammals than apes and humans are.

So there!

:p

I was indeed wrong about the baboons, fair enough. But my point was that the rule has exceptions. Therefore your statement

was false. It would have been correct if you had said something like, \"as a general rule...\" rather than \"all monkeys\" and \"all apes\". Do your research, anthropologist lady!

So there :rolleyes::p

Seriously, though; you\'re the expert. I stand corrected on a number of points :innocent:

While you are all arguing about semantics, the champanzees have already claimed an island for themselves.

Human sympathizers (traitors to our cause) get no monkey love.

I\'m stockpiling my throwing poop, just in case they go for a land grab.

Wake up people!

God, i feel i should apologise! I was convinced the Gibbon had a tail. I have shown my ignorance too often of late! Godammit!
Well, that did raise an eyebrow, but then I reckoned you probably knew better. Who\'s the real fool then?

Well, you clearly :D
