Thanks gang! ~sigh~ Next time I'll just stick with the satin finish and if i need a flat area I'll brush it on. I can't bring myself to waste Dulcote on tabletop minis :p Yeah Digga, it actually is Alice. She was from Tale of War. Not sure if you can get her anymore as I don't see her on their site. Canny, now I can't look at them without thinking They're grrrreat!

Awesome stuff Zab.

I have been using Liquitex matte and gloss varnishes with a 50/50 mix of Vallejo Airbrush Thinner(this stuff is frikkin awesome) in the airbrush with great results. Just don't let the airbrush run out. It dries around the needle in the cup super quick and makes it a pain to clean.

Big fan of the RE series. Don't care what anyone says, I love Milla! I can admit the last movie did suck, but I blame the writers not the actors. Looking forward to how you do this.

I'll have to pick some more Liquitex then. I have some of their AB medium coming and next time i am out at the art store i'll grab some of their matte and give it a shot. Thanks for the tip. Got a bit done on Alice and her base. nothing major just little job between letting the paint dry on the doors and trim downstairs - I swear I'll have some pictures of that too, just be patient! I know how you guys like your doors and trim WIPs :p

I added texture to the sand by making some apoxie sculpt into a slurry/ paste and applying it to the surface with a stippling brush.

Then I primed that base and Allice with dark grey, grey, white in a Zenithal fashion which is all the rage these days and does actually help preshade and pic out details.

I think i'll try a more limited pallet on this one and push the contrast quite bit. I was really inspired by ten's Columbo and We7's Chaos marines.

Base looks Awesome! Alice is a cool little sculpt. Did she come with the Uzi's? I think she would make a sweet fantasy conversion. Is she missing fingers on her right hand?

Zab

Yep, she came with the uzi's. She is very petite (like dark sword or anima tactics petite) so I don't fancy converting her, but if you do I would use the pin + sodium bicarbonate/super glue combo to make a super strong bond of those fine parts. It was the only way I could attach her legs and arms. I think it's the angle of the shot and the sculpt. Her fingers are there, but she is holding the other uzi weird. Sorry, no crows on this one - the base is only 1"x1" so she is pretty much the focus and I think it would be hard to disguise whatever held the crows up, be it wires or whatnot. Plus I would want a whole murder of them like that one from reaper flying above with her looking up like in the movie!

Okay, so here is a look at my "limited palette" for Alice. I may not even use all of the these colors and will probably just shade and highlight by mixing in black or white. I'm going to try and avoid anything too pure or vibrant to maintain that dusty desert look. Therer will however be some pigments used for the sand and some Tamyia Clear Red on the base in an interesting way, but those will be the last steps and I'll remain vague on those until I get there.

I recently saw another sculpt based on Alice over at studio miniatures where instead of Uzis she has machetes...

I may have to do up another version of her with the crows that WGS was talking about ;)

I certainly think you have the prettier sculpt.

Crows on like tiny wires? Or maybe a wall behind her with the crows on wires from the wall so that if you look straight on you won't see the wires? Maybe a little.... d-d-d-DIORAMA!

LOL

Diorama?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooo! Actually, I might have a 40k themed one in mind when I am done with her...crap.

Nice start to the base...

i haven't seen the last movie, so no spoilers (the wife says no violent shows with the kid around, so i says no shows focused around sex...that leaves us watching discovery and A&E reruns on Amazon Prime).

Yeah we rented it since we missed it in theaters - kinda glad. The only spoiler I will give is that it felt like a video game, a very repetitive one. Fight, fight, fight, run, run, run - Boss Level. Lather, rinse, repeat. Thin plot, awkward dialogue. It was bad. You'll be able to see it all over certain networks this Halloween I'm sure. Wait for it to hit the airwaves cause it's not worth a dime. I loved the series so it hurt a bit, Mila is still aging gracefully though :)

haha so true, a video game is spot on.
some nice earthy tones on that one. Im looking forward to some tamiya Blood and gore! Im going to have to practice for alien decapatation!

Zab,

I never heard of using sodium bicarbonate with super glue. Does it really improve the strength of the glue's hold? Or is it used for your stress levels while pinning such a small mini?

Hey Khonner. It's a little bit of both really. It gives a super strong bond, but it also makes the super glue dry and harden much faster so you have to be very precise. What i do to mitigate the chances of a misaligned piece is to pin and apply the glue in the normal way and then sprinkle the sodium over the area, thus drying the exposed edges of the glue and securing the pieces in place to dry at their leisure. You can also use the same trick for filling and smoothing small gaps in models by using thick super glue and sodium bicarbonate. It's sandable and has the strength and smoothness of fibreglass almost. Great for vehicles or large scale metal kits (knight models 70mm range comes to mind) where you don't have to be too gentle with your attentions. Just don't use it on resin because in your attempts to smooth out the gaps you'll sand more of the mini away than the super glue/sodium combo.

I will have to get some and try it. Last night, trying to put together my Menoth Harbinger and the really the only thing I managed to glue were my fingers.. Stupid glue..

I see a tutorial in your near future Zab. Haha. I feel like a noob asking but can you educate me on this glueing business your talking about please.

Sure. It's specific to super glue and metal minis. Sometimes you have a mini with very small contact points (infinity minis arms are a perfect example) where you just know that one drop of super glue will hold it, but only just enough. If you have a mini like that where you cannot pin and drill the joint to support it you can use sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to help speed up the glue's drying time and make a super strong bond. Some people put the glue on one piece and some sodium on the other and press them together others glue the two pieces and dip it in the sodium. Either way it's a good trick for small metal joints.
