Thanks Digga. You're right: I think this second attempt is better. I need to add teeth (dreading that), but I think this is a better proportion to the body and his face is more expressive now.

and I'm painting news... I started my Khorgorath. Just basic colour on the skin. I've opted for a lighter, orangey red so I can share it down with purple. Not much to see, but it's a start.

That face is absolutely great!

Nice start on your Khorgorath as well - you have been busy! *stares wistfully at her own painting table from in front of her laptop*

IIf you ask me I think the whole in reverse (light base color to really benefit from the varied tones like purples and brownish purples)is much more a desired way of how I like to paint with wonderful results in the e d..your off to a great start with that understanding alone.thumbs up.

Thanks all. Digga: yep, I love the ears too. Unfortunately so does my tile floor - after baking him I dropped him and they both smashed off. Gah!

here he is with amended ears, teeth and tongue, and some basic clothing and armour sketched out. Still very rough at the mo.

Not sure how I ended up running two projects side by side, but actually it has worked out so far. When I get bored of sculpting (or cross at pinged-off ears) then I can crack open the paint pots and get on the Khorgorath. Here he is with a bit more paint worked up. I think his leg skin is almost there, but some still to do on the main body. Not touched the arms or back yet.

One pic, one closeup:

Well first off why is there an arrow on Khorg pointing at his missing PP? Lol that makes me laugh, but the paint work is looking outstanding. Second nice recovery and progress on the sculpt. You really brought new life to the model with the teeth and tongue, also that fur back cape is awesome.

Glad you like the sculpty bit, Digga. The teeth were a bugger to fit. Next thing is going to be an axe or sword or something in his right hand - should be amusing as he'll then look like he's chopped his own left hand off.

Well first off why is there an arrow on Khorg pointing at his missing PP?

I was going to freehand a sign on his chest saying 'abandon hope all ye who enter here'.

Thanks BAM: these are wise words for a newbie painter like me. I've found it much easier to shade down - especially the red.

That mottled effect is looking fabulous! You're a natural at this whole painting thing - it's great to see. :)

I snuck in on a study break. *shhhhh*

Thanks folks. Arch, you're welcome to hide here anytime: my lips are sealed.

Here's last night's efforts - filling in the back and arms, and base coating his hooves and leg horns. I'm a bit annoyed with myself that I didn't fill in some of the panel gaps (like the one down his spine) so will fix these tonight. Also going to smooth some of the striations and scars on his back with a red wash. Other than that you can (hopefully) see his skin blend from red to orange with some purple. I haven't used any black yet - another first for me.

Tonight is is my last chance to paint before I put him away, so obviously not going to finish him. But my king maulg has arrived (Yay!) and I'm out every night until post Halloween after tonight, like some awful social butterfly.

Anyway: the pics...

Simply marvelous! How have you created that textured effect while keeping it so smooth? Really liking where you've gone with him. If you're going to be on a break maybe I can catch up with you at some point. :)

*shhhhh* I'm not actually here. *ninja Arch*

Hey dazzler! Just came in to say that I really like that kind of "galaxy" effect that you gave to the mini. It gives it a lot of personality. ;)
*Oh sh..! what was that shadow? was it a giant hamster rolling in a ball dressed like a ninja? No way...*
xD

Thanks folks, much appreciated. BAM, I'd love to see what you do with this beastie (besides put us to shame, of course).

So: a short and sweet session last night (which I am calling the night of 'not another bloody skull'). Lots of basing the bone work in pink. Why pink, I hear you ask? Good question. New bone is a kind of creamy pink-White when it is 'fresh' so I figured these bones, encased as they are in the flesh of a demon, struck me that they'd be pretty fresh. Ugh. So the next stage for these will be to highlight in a creamy white, then add a wash of blood and gore and stuff around them. Hopefully it will look suitably disgusting.

also did these tentacles. Is it odd to be pleased with your tentacles? Well, I am. The gradient from red to cream turned out better than I expected. I need to work them up a bit more, then gloss the inner 'mouth' bit for some shine, and maybe (gulp) try a bit of UHU drool and slime. Should be interesting. Or disastrous.

So here's the front view again. Smoothed a bit of the red, and based yet more of the damn skulls. Seriously, they're everywhere.

20r1dn6.jpg

and here is the back. I knocked down the harshness of the scars and made the red a bit more consistent. Also smoothed his bottom, which is now a lovely cherry red.

so now I will reluctantly put him to one side for a while, unless I can sneak in some extra painting time this week (should probably take tips from our resident ninja hamster on how to do this). On to the King Maulg paintalong next: hopefully I can take some of my learnings about applying smoother coats and detail over to that little chappie...

Really beautiful!! ---> If a lad with fresh bones, tentacles, skulls, half of his skin ripped off etc.. can be given such an adjective xD

OOk So I'm gonna go go out on the limb here again this is not necessary but will really give a kick to the eyes....okay so if your even half way an understanding where light and shadows falls-and by all these beautiful pieces your showing you do-but here's what you can try if your really bold. Ok so fined out which and where those stipple dotted effects on the legs catch the most light and add very small diluted dots of white positioned on the top of each dot.so basically dot the tops of the dots that catch the most light.
For example highlighting 101-(101) any model that has a bend at the knees where the upper thigh is 45°-90° etc a greater amount of light catch so the dots there would be getting the dot at the top of the tops.

Hello all: and thanks Maenas and BAM. Maenas, I know what you mean - hopefully he's looking gross, but in a good way.

And BAM: your idea is frankly insane. I love it. I'll give it a go, but I'm doubtful I can make it work. Still, I'm willing to give it a try!

so... Um. So I painted a bit more up. I know I'm supposed to be doing King Maulg and all, but seriously: he's so bad with moldlines and dodgy bits that after green stuffing his gaps and whittling away at seams and suchlike, I just fancied getting the brushes out. I'll update the paintalong too, but in the meantime I had a little extra session on old korgi here.

pic 1: a few things here. I glossed inside the tentacle mouth, and I'm quite pleased with it. Not too over the top, but it adds something. I'm still thinking about trying a bit of UHU slobber, but not braved it yet. Biggest changes you can see on here are: skulls, and the claw hand. Oh, and finally glued on his modesty belt.

20fc7qd.jpg

Pic 2: a top view. So the biggest change is the skull work (more bloody skulls). I held back from making them too disgusting, as the red and purple were blending it too closely to the skin around it. Not sure it is finished, but I'm quite pleased with the various cracks and tone. Also did the frilly orifice on his right shoulder, and glossed it to make it look wet. I mottled outwit ha bit of brown so it looks nice and yuck - not realising of course that it'll be mostly covered up by the grabber thing that glues in over it. Ah well: we all know it's painted, right? So that's all that counts.

htfdps.jpg

Pic 3: the cherry bottom view. Not much has changed, but I can't not show off his bottom, eh?

2cnwrbt.jpg

Pic 4: graah! Bit more of a view of the claw hand.

2rz3vhy.jpg

Pic 5: and this is where I'd love your advice. I've done the preliminary mottled metal on his glaive (the right word?), and filled the in between bits in red. A mistake, I think - too similar to his skin. So what colour do you think I should go for? The pattern is replicated in his pants, which is partly why I haven't painted that part yet.

I'm thinking my options are:

cool blue/white
gold/brassy
glowing orange

your expertise is very welcome on this...

right, time to go to work. I'll post my prepping on Maulgy in a bit.
