Well their first mistake was using university students for the tests.
I mean having been one until recently I can say that they aren\'t exactly renowned for their cognitive abilities.... especially first thing when they get up in the afternoon :drunk::drunk::drunk::drunk::drunk:

I saw that on the news. The chimps only won because they got a treat evry time they did it.
Actually, the adult chimps did worse than the students. It seems, that like humans, young chimpanzees have a much better short term memory than adults.
Oh, and in case you forgot...Chimpanzees are not monkeys!

Several issues with the study.
First of all, I\'m wondering where it was done. The article Implies Japan, but the study could\'ve been done elsewhere. Anyway I\'ve read before that Asian populations tend to have lower spatial abilities than Western populations, I don\'t know to what extent but it\'s possibly an issue. There are also male/female differences in spatial cognition, we are each better at different types of tasks.
There\'s also the issue of incentive and reward. University undergrads doing it for course credit might behave differently than an ape (not monkey!) doing it for their supper.
It would also be interesting to see how big of a difference there was between human and ape scores. Statistical difference does not equal significance in the real world
At least the comments from the American expert at the bottom acknowledges the difference between memorizing a pattern and language-based memory skills. That seems rather important to a Psychology/Literature type student like me.

Planet of the Apes! YAY! Think of the glorious rebellions humans can try and incite?! Or would the world really be a better place if humans were no longer dominant and the rest of primates took over the world and learned complex society and culture? Fascinating!

I agree....the Planet of the Apes original (while had some great parts) was long tedious and boring. I love the idea of the \'roles\' being reversed.
I had great hopes that the \'remake\' would captilize on the cool stuff and lose the stupid stuff. It fell flat, and other than the costumes, didn\'t even compare to the original.
Charlton Heston played an ape in the remake, but why oh why couldn\'t they have given him the line.

i quite liked the remake, and the original myself...luckily i saw it while i was in new zealand...if i had seen it while i was in africa, i would have been lookin\' over my shoulder the whole time afterwards... filthy apes...
i thought helena was pretty hot as an ape chick...is it wrong that i wanted some hot monkey love with that bird???
as for the article, believe me, we don\'t want the chimps in charge...they are mean, violent, bastards...chimps are a lot like us, even in the fact that they wage war...if they take a dislike to ya, now ya know for sure that they will remember your face!!!

Would lack of interest be another problem? A baby chimp might be amused with a crib toy for an hour, an adult human not even 5 seconds. A child or chimp could sit with simple Lego blocks for a while, whereas an adult human would need more complexity to stimulate them.
We lose interest so quickly, that small things are often lost to us.
