Think you could get any more exact to the comparison shot lol crazy man. Love the basing too. Sorry to hear about the car troubles, they are never fun.

Sorry to hear about your automotive mishaps.

The base looks great and, as WGS says, nice and natural. My only suggestion would be to try and introduce some different lengths in the grass in sections. At the moment the tufts look a bit too uniform.

The car has been a pain in the arse and to make matters worst the garage responsible wanted £270 to put it right! Er no get knotted Mr mechanic! I've had a shouting match on the phone with him and then made a complaint to their customer services. Hopefully it will all get sorted soon.

Thanks for the C&C Arch. This is the first grass layer. Once this is done (and the models are painted and in place) I can add all the finally fiddly details like larger grass stems and taller flowers. I've learnt to my detriment not to do that until last as otherwise I keep on breaking it whilst I'm painting :)

Still more grass to add (and the stuff that's there needs blending, weathering and incorporating properly) but it's coming along

You are a wise, wise man - it makes perfect sense to only add them later.

Oh, I meant to say that the orc skin is a pretty good match to the reference photo.

It was a lesson hard learnt and involved far too much swearing :)

just revisiting the picture of the face, I reckon I still need to add a little more pint to the top lip and cheek. It's amazing just how useful photos of your work can be!

I am so excited to watch this come together. Your base is looking great, the glimpse of a figure looks spot on, and the composition looks as awesome in three dimensions as in Paul Bonner's original.
It seems you've set yourself your biggest diorama challenge yet, and I'm sure you'll produce another masterpiece!

Yeah, sorry about the car, but we take our painting time where we can get it eh? I love the concept and the artwork. Everything you've done so far looks like a perfect match. This is going to be epic!

That base really is coming along magnificently. Since this is a part I really struggle with, I have a few questions for you...

How do you set up your tufts? Do you custom make them or are they premade (in which case, what brand?)? What about the texturing on the base? It looks like you used sculpy or something similar over the corkboard, but what was the next step you made?

Wow thanks all!

@SaintT thanks buddy. This is really pushing me but it isn't the biggest base challenge. That gets awarded to the slice of pirate ship waiting patiently on the side lines, THAT on is stupidly intimidating but will have to wait it's turn :)

@ Ten thanks mate, I'm so looking forward to seeing your stuff at Salute.

@ Alowan good spot mate you are 100% correct :)

@ Maenas thanks mate

@ S-Brot thanks dude. It's my first go at confrontation miniatures and I have to say I'm loving them. Sooo much character

@ Khavor yeah the car has been both a blessing and a curse. I missed the holiday but I haven't had this much uninterrupted painting time for months!

@ Daegond ok so the basic steps of this base where

1) make a contoured hill from layers of cork (thing map contours for the different levels)
2) use air dry clay to bloke in the hill
3) once the clay is dry, super glue cut down pieces of tree bark to represent the large craggy rocks
4) paint the base with a mix of water and white glue. Small sections ata time. Onto this I scatter a mix of sand, brick dust and small stones and debris. Wait for this to dry and apply more if needed
5) I sorted out around 150 small pebbles from a bag of Herebrook grit 5, placed them where I wanted them and then went around gluing them all down
6) done

for the grass I've used a number of different brands as each has a different property which helps stop it being to uniform. GW, miniNatur and I can't find the other one. I've got several different colour but for the yellow, orange and red tufts I've had to dye my own as the colour I wanted weren't available

hope that helps :) honestly your best bet is to look online. There are literally hundreds of great tutorials out there all who will be far better at explaining the process than me :) having said that if you want to know anything else, I'm happy to help

Thanks Itonwork and BAM

so mixing it up a little to keep it interesting. Bit of work done on the stone spear. I'm tempted to go a little darker in the shadows but as WGS suggested, I'll wait until I've done a little more so I can judge the overall colour

C&C welcome

Tim

looking fantastic so far man! i am absolutely in love with the way you painted the rocks on the base!. good work on the spear tip. i second WGS and say wait, but if you are going to go darker with it push the colour contrast rather than thevalue of the thing i think.
